for japan with love...

not even sure how to begin.
what started off as "i hope we get 50 bloggers involved" and "i hope we do raise $5,500"
turned into something far beyond what i had ever imagined.
it's 9:10 pm right now as i write this.
at this moment, we have raised $22,715 and it grows every minute.
we know we have more than 1200 bloggers involved with the Bloggers Day of Silence-
from all over- from West Coast through the East Coast, all over Europe and even in Australia!

Henny, Lucy and i got together today.
we sat for a moment to grasp what we had started.
i probably have blank stared at my inbox every morning since we started this campaign
i'm in complete awe at the outpouring of support and love from all of you.
it has been so amazing to see all of us come together to help.
not just with raising donations, but with raising awareness for all of this.

even so, i feel like i'm still not doing enough.
we may have raised enough money to help with a few families.
but turn on the news, and you'll see,
Japan is dealing with the aftermath of an earthquake and a tsunami,
a blizzard and a possible nuclear meltdown.
i can't even fathom what it must be like.
as of today,
6,406 are confirmed dead, 2,409 injured
and 10,259 are still missing.

i've been watching the videos of where survivors go back to their homes.
there's one of a fire department chief of a town, who had left when the earthquake happened to set up the tsunami walls,  the tsunami hit, and he lost his whole family.
there's one where a mother talks of how she lost the grip of her daughter as the tsunami pulled the two apart.
it goes on.
it's completely heartbreaking.
there have been countless amount of times where my eyes have welled up with tears.

so.
from over here and as much as i can offer,
my heart, prayers and thoughts are with you, Japan.
we are all behind you and will do whatever it takes to help you with the long road of recovery.
i'd love to be there physically helping with whatever i can, and maybe one day, i'll get there.
but for now, this is what i have...what we have.
many thanks, squeals, hugs
to Lucy and Henny from Utterly Engaged
for helping me start this.

heartfelt hugs to all of you.
for the donations and help with bloggers day of silence.
thanks for making this happen.
every little helps so keep contributing and spreading the word about

and so here goes,
2:46 PM
Japan Time
March 11, 2011.
silence for those who can no longer speak
and for those in pain.

much love,

Beyond being moved to tears, alone, we feel like there's nothing we can do at times of tragedy. But with collective efforts such as this one, we can try to overcome our feelings of overwhelming helplessness and work to make a bit of difference in the lives of those who are suffering terribly. Thank you so much for organizing this!

Your words are a beautiful and painful reminder that we all must take action even in some small way to help. Look at what your one lovely empathic heart did with some serious passion and determination behind it! We are all connected and I thank you for creating something that allowed us all to take that first step away from the catatonic, detached gaze at television images towards moving our hearts and minds into contributing to the recovery. xo

It's so amazing how people can come together and help one another. I'm so glad you did this. I'm happy to help any small way that I can. I'm silent on my blog today. It's just heartbreaking to hear about in the news all they are going through.

Lydia, thank you so much for organizing this. I'm from Japan and I really appreciate your initiatives in helping those who were affected. I live abroad but my friends back home told me how much they've been touched by the help from other countries. Every little helps truly and thank you for finding a way for those of us far away to help.

I'm breaking the silence (http://marysplayground.blogspot.com) to comment. Your initiative is awesome and trustworthy (so many taking advantage of this disaster in false donations, how can this be!), my heart is with Japan, I think no disaster touched me like this, don't know why (tsunamis scare the hell out of me), and I haven't even seen videos or stories regarding the families (just yours, here), is heartbreaking. My love to you and Japan*

Gail said...

So amazing. So proud of you. And, like Mary, breaking my silence today only to comment and say that my heart, like yours, is with our friends overseas.

This is BEYOND amazing! Thank you for setting us, and letting us fellow bloggers join in. Every donation and prayer will help those in need. My hart is with those in Japan - it is hard to even express the sorrow I feel - I wish I coudl do so much more.

Thank you so much for creating this event! What a great way to help and use our strengths as bloggers to get the word out and encourage donations for Japan. It reminds me of a quote I love, " I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything but I can do something. And I will not let what I can't do get in the way of what I can do." Thoughts and prayers are with Japan.
